About Apink
Although some may know them as A Cube Entertainment or Plan A Entertainment, the company now known as Play M Entertainment has been making waves in the South Korean music industry.
Perhaps no wave has been as big as the one they caught with hit group Apink. The group debuted with seven members in April of 2011. The original members were Park Cho-rong, Jung Eun-ji, Kim Nam-joo, Oh Ha-young, Yoon Bo-mi, Son Na-eun, and Hong Yoo-kyung who left the group in the year 2013 to focus on her education.
The group’s image has always been seen as an unusual one as they have opted for a more innocent and girlish image. As the group evolved, there were moments where a more mature side of the girls was shown, although they always retained their roots of innocence.
Over the course of their run, Apink’s releases include though are not limited to a total of 6 studio albums, 3 compilation albums, 29 singles, 8 extended plays, and 33 music videos.
The girl group has headlined and toured all throughout Japan, Korea, and Asia and even headlined a North American tour in the year 2016. Apink has been nominated for 75 awards throughout their careers and have won 34 of them.
These nominations were at sbeeral different Asian award shows over the years including the Korean Entertainment Arts Awards, Melon Music Awards, Gaon Chart Music Awards, Seoul Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, Asia Artist Awards, and very many more.
Apink’s first full length studio album was entitled “Une Anneé” and was released on May 9th, 2012. This was the final release that Yoo-kyung was a member of the group. Led by the songs “April 19th”, “Hush”, and “Bubibu” the album peaked at #4 on the Gaon album charts, which is essentially the South Korean version of the Billboard charts.
The earliest single was “April 19th” which was released two weeks before the album. “Hush” also received a big promotional boost as they released it the same day as the album and began promoting it the next day on the South Korean music television program called M! Countdown.
Many supporters consider one of those two songs to be the highlight of the album. “Bubibu” was elected as the third single off the debut album after a fan poll was held to determine the next single and that song won. The single version of the song is a remixed version of the album standout.
Three years after the successful debut studio album, Apink released their second full length studio album entitled “Pink Memory” on July 16th, 2015. The singles “Promise U”, “Remember”, and “Petal” led the way for yet another successful Apink release.
The album peaked at #2 on the Gaon music charts and sold over 90,000 copies compared to the 45,000 copies that the previous album had sold. Many fans will tell you the main standout on the album was the single “Remember” which got easily the heaviest promotion out of all the songs on the album. It was promoted on South Korean program Music Bank as well as various other popular entities in the region.
The group took a one year and two month break before which was their longest hiatus before finally releasing their third studio album entitled “Pink Revolution”.
The wait proved to be well worth it for both Apink and their fans as Apink topped seven Korean music charts shortly after the release of the album and fans got to enjoy a wonderful 9-song offering from the group, led by singles “The Wave” and “Only One”.
The 33 minute album was successful due to the anticipation after the long layoff and also the fact that it was the five year anniversary of the group.
The group’s most expansive release was their second Japanese language album entitled “Pink Doll” which was released in four separate editions and also included a DVD of music videos for various songs.
The four different editions were the Regular Edition, Limited Edition A, Limited Edition B, and Limited Edition C. The 12 song album was released December of 2016 by Universal Music Japan and was followed up by the album “Pink Stories” which to date, remains the group’s last album release.
