About Dal Shabet

Dal Shabet is a South Korean girl group with a prolific catalog of music. They debuted in 2011 and have released ten EPs, five soundtracks, and eleven singles. There were also 15 music videos and five collaborations. The group has had some members come and go over the years, but currently, the group has four members, Serri, Ah Young, Woohee, and Subin.

Early in their career, the group received some backlash as they were deemed “too sexual.” There were complaints about their controversial outfits, lyrics, choreography, and music videos. However, as time went on and more girl groups joined the ranks, there was not as much criticism.

On January 3, 2011, the group debuted with their EP Supa Dupa Diva, and the music video to go along with it. It peaked at nine on the Korean music charts. The group started with six members including the three of the current members, Serri, Ah Young, Subin, plus three additional members Jiyul, Kaeun, and Viki. One year later Viki was replaced with current member Woohee, and Jiyul left in 2016.

The single “Supa Dupa Diva,” was called one of the most addicting songs of 2011. Their choreography received good reviews also. In April 2011, the EP Pink Rocket and the companion video were released. It peaked at number seven on the Korean music charts. It was supposed to show a more elegant and feminine side to the group. It was promoted on M! Countdown.

In early August 2011, concept photos of each member were being released as a teaser for their upcoming EP Bling Bling. The group was quickly told their outfits were “too sexual” for live television and the whole concept of the album would need to be overhauled. It was later released to good reviews and rated high on the music charts.

Dal Shabet was announced in 2012 as the new model of the Korean luxury brand SONOVI. The brand sells handbags, shoes, and accessories.

The group announced in early 2012 that they would be undergoing a “dramatic and powerful transformation” for their fourth EP Hit U. It became their first number one album. It was followed by their first studio album Band Bang, and yet another EP in 2012 titled Have, Don’t Have. They made the top 20 on the music charts. Dal Shabet released the soundtrack “It’s You,” for the television series “All About My Romance.”

In 2013, the EP Be Ambitious was released. It was announced soon afterward that the lyrics were “unfit for public broadcast due to sexual content.” The song would have to be changed if they wanted to promote it on television. The group complied and changed the lyrics in question. They were then allowed to broadcast it.

Also in 2013, a men’s rights group, “Man of Korea,” filed an injunction against the further distribution of the single “Be Ambitious.” They claimed it depreciated men and women and it was also harmful to the youth. Happy Face Entertainment and the men’s group held a joint conference to discuss the lawsuit. After the meeting, the men’s group agreed to drop it and they cleared up the misunderstanding of the song. The EP was released and it charted well, perhaps due to all of the fuss it caused.

In 2015, the group’s eighth EP Joker is Alive, was released. The title track “Joker,” was considered a swing jazz dance song. Once again the group courted controversy with the release of the title track “Joker.” In the music video, the girls appeared to be seducing the Joker, who was played by Lee Seung-ho. The video was banned from KBS because of explicit choreography. The lyrics were also censored because the English word for “joker” sounds similar to a Korean expletive.

The group’s last two EPs were released in 2016, Naturalness, and Fri. Sat. Sun, both charted well. There has not been any new music since then, but Happy Face Entertainment announced the group has not disbanded.
