About SUPER M
SUPER M is a new South Korean K-pop boy band that debuted on October 4, 2019. The group is unique because all the members are from other well-known bands. Member Taemin is from Shinee, Baekyun and Kai are from EXO, Taeyong, Ten, Lucas, and Mark are from NCT.
Before their official debut, there were rumors that SM Entertainment was putting together a special project band consisting of current members of other bands. On August 7, 2019, Steve Barnett of Capitol Music Group and Lee Soo-Man, founder SM Entertainment together officially announced the group SUPER M. The “M” stands for Matrix and Master.
The teaser revealed who the members are and what their previous groups were. Each member is said to have vocal, rap, and dancing abilities. Lee referred to the group as “The Avengers of K-pop.” He stated the group was going to focus mostly on performance-based music. The group has been in the works for about a year.
There was some backlash initially to the project because some artists felt the agencies should be finding new talent and not just focusing on already established groups. The public is looking for fresh talent instead of the same artists from other groups.
However, with widespread interest before the group even debuted, it meant they had great potential. They also faced some backlash for seemingly promoting mostly in the American music markets.
The group’s self-titled album was released on October 4 of this year, with the lead single “Jopping,” and its companion video also coming out the same day. It debuted in the U.S.
at number one on Billboard 200 Albums chart. Their debut concert was at the Capitol Records Building in Los Angeles on October 5. Their tour starts in November with ten dates in the U.S. and Canada.
SUPER M made their television debut on The Ellen Show on October 9. Ellen said on the show that there was a line of girls waiting around the block trying to get in to see them. The group gave her a check for $50,000 toward her gorilla rehab initiative.
