About ITZY
ITZY is a South Korean girl group formed by JYP entertainment consisting of members Yeji, Lia, Ryujin, Chaeryeong and Yuna. They debuted on February 12, 2019 with the release of their single album It’z Different.
And how different it is indeed. Eschewing traditional ideas of love and feminine deference, ITZY emphasizes independence, agency and self-empowerment via its unapologetic lyrical content and upfront musical structure which is primarily a fusion of modern electronic music interspersed with hip hop percussion.
In the traditional cultural sense, they pay respect to family and use them as a reference point for personal growth as illustrated in the song, “ICY” where main rapper Ryujin says, “shout out to my mama. Thank you to my papa; I got all the good stuff from you.” And in “Dalla Dalla” Ryujin once again alludes to family stating, “Sisters Tell me I’m daring.”
It all started in 2013, when Chaeryong was a contestant on K-Pop Star 3 at only 12. With no significant results but a promising appearance, she went on to compete in JYP Entertainment’s survival show Sixteen at only 14 years old, again not making the cut to become a part of the winning girl group, Twice.
In 2018, main raper Ryujin was a contestant on JTCB’s survival show Mix Nine, winning the girl’s pool but losing to the boys in overall competition.
With two of the cornerstones of the group having been noticed by JYP, they would assemble the other members and announce their arrival on the scene via a video trailer uploaded to the agency’s official channel. On February 12, the group released It’z Different with the lead single “Dalla Dalla”.
Being received well by the audience for its unabashed lyrics and its energetic disposition, it rocketed up the Billboard charts; the single coming in at No.3 and ending up at No.2. In the U.S it sold 2,000 downloads for the week ending Feb 14, according to Nielsen Music, making it the U.S’s weekly best seller in K-Pop.
The single “Want It?” was released alongside “Dalla Dalla” debuting at No.8 after 1,000 digital downloads. “Dalla Dalla” debuted as the second most popular song on YouTube, surpassing 17 million views in 24 hours and holding the record for the fastest K-Pop video to reach 100 million views.
On February 21, nine days since their debut, Itzy received their first music show win on M Countdown, doing so faster than any girl group before them, including all genres, girl groups and countries, respectively.
Cresting a wave of positive momentum, their debut EP It’z Icy was released on July 29, 2019 with accompanying music video for the lead single, “Icy”.
